Staging a home for Sale

In this economy it can be difficult to sell your home because of a glut of houses for sale on the market. There are things that you can do to make your home stand out from the rest without requiring major remodels. There are professionals that stage homes for sale but why not use a few of their tricks and set your home up for success without dishing out the big bucks.


1. Declutter

When you are decluttering your home to make it appealing to potential buyers putting everything in its place is just the first step. It also means not having a lot of items out in the open. Go room by room and put things out of sight. Coats, shoes and umbrellas should be neatly tucked away in closets. Small kitchen appliances and dishes should be stored in cupboards or cabinets. Knickknacks and pictures should be stashed away out of sight. It may even mean renting a storage space to stow bulky pieces of furniture.  Doing this not only makes a space look neater and more open, it also allows prospective buyers to visualize themselves living in the space.


2. Clean it up

A deep cleaning can really make your home look like new. Polishing old cabinets and furniture with orange oil can make dry wood look new while adding a pleasant smell to your home. Bleaching dingy grout and polishing chrome fixtures can really perk up a bathroom. Tackle other cleaning projects such as ovens, refrigerators, and closets.  Clean your windows both inside and out. Be sure to take care of any musty smells that may be lingering particularly in your basement. A home that smells fresh and sparkles will be seen as a home that is well cared for and worth purchasing.


3. Make Minor Repairs

Little repairs can go a long way. Replace cracked floorboards, damaged cabinet fixtures, and fix leaky faucets. These small problems can leave a negative impression on a prospective buyer.  Details definitely matter and taking care of small problems can ensure that your house is viewed favorably.


4. New Bedding and Towels

Fresh bedding in the bedrooms and new towels in the bathrooms will add a cozy look to homes. Bright colors are the little touches that make your home stand out from the dozens of other homes that are on the market.  


5. Take care of the outside

Curb appeal is not to be underestimated. Make sure your lawn is mowed and your bushes trimmed. If you have flowerbeds in the front make sure they are weeded and well watered. If your house looks inviting from the outside, a potential buyer is more likely to pursue your home. They might even drive by for a second look and an inviting exterior will leave a positive and lasting impression.


6. Paint

A good coat of paint can really brighten up a room. It adds to a clean fresh feeling. Consider neutral colors, which will leave rooms looking more spacious. Don’t forget the window trim and even consider painting the exterior of your home as well.


Selling your home can be a stressful time but using these tricks can help the process go more quickly. Even though it will take some work, it will all be worthwhile when your home is sold.
